What’s the difference between a putty knife and a plaster trowel?
A putty knife is smaller and typically used for filling nail holes, small cracks and local repairs. A plaster trowel has a larger, wider blade designed to spread compound over bigger areas, such as leveling patches, smoothing joints or resurfacing sections of wall or ceiling.
How do I choose the right putty knife size and blade type?
Narrow putty knives (around 1"-2") are ideal for tight spots and small holes. Wider blades (3"-6") work better for feathering out patches and blending edges into the surrounding wall. Flexible blades are good for spreading and smoothing compound, while stiffer blades help scrape away loose material or old filler before repair.
How do I prepare a repaired area for painting?
After filling holes or cracks, let the compound dry fully, then sand the area smooth so it’s level with the surrounding surface. Remove dust with a cloth or vacuum, and apply primer over the repaired spots to seal the surface and even out absorption. Once primed and dry, the wall is ready for your finish paint.
