What are drywall finishing tools used for?
Drywall finishing tools are used after hanging and basic taping to smooth joint compound, blend seams and create or refine textures.
What’s the difference between a taping knife and a skimming blade?
A taping knife is narrower and is mainly used for applying and feathering compound over joints, screw holes and corners. A skimming blade is wider and often more flexible, designed to cover larger areas and create very flat, smooth finishes by pulling compound across broader sections of wall or ceiling. Many finishers use taping knives for initial coats and skimming blades for final smoothing.
How do compound roller covers and knockdown knives work together?
Compound roller covers are used to roll joint compound or texture material onto the surface quickly and evenly. Once the material is applied, a knockdown knife is lightly drawn over the peaks at the right time. After the compound has set slightly but is not fully dry-to flatten them and create a uniform “knockdown” texture. This combination speeds up application and helps produce consistent decorative finishes.
